Why Study Abroad?

Tuesday, November 26, 2013

Normally, you have four years of college. Sometimes, you have less, sometimes you have more. Life happens. Things get advanced, left behind, what else is new?
I always had a four year plan. I knew what classes I was going to take, I knew exactly how college was going to pan out.
False.
Freshman year, I came in undeclared and quickly thought that since I was undeclared I was therefore going to fail. So I declared a major I knew nothing about. Sociology. I took one class, and knew it was not for me. Granted, I got an A in the class and learned a TON of new things, I did not want to take classes over the next four years on this topic. Once again, I was undeclared.
The next year, I declared my major in what I knew, had grown up with, and could see myself enjoying. Politics.
I was not behind schedule because of my major change, rather I found out that I could graduate early! But, instead of saving money, sorry Mom and Dad, I decided to add on a minor in Public Relations. Now I would be graduating right on time. What did this mean? No semester abroad for me. But in all honesty, I asked myself in spring 2013, Could I actually spend 6 months in a foreign country without my parents, friends, or sorority? Probably not. This is why I started looking at summer programs.
2 weeks? 3 weeks? 4 weeks? 6 weeks?
Australia? Paris? Madrid? South America?
A conference? An internship? Spanish classes? Service trip?

When I texted my mom about the Madrid, four week intensive program, I knew I had enough information to justify going. I would finish my foreign language requirement while still studying abroad, and I would make it back in time for my summer job. It was perfect. All I needed to do was find the money and get accepted into the program.
I am lucky enough to thank my parents for funding me on my study abroad trip. I honestly would be even more broke than I am now not have been able to go if it wasn't for them. Spain took my money, Spain gave me memories, Spain gave me friends, Spain made me gain 3 pounds and then lose 10, and I gave Spain a part of my heart. I want to go back to Spain every day. I want to explore more. I want to show my friends and family my favorite places in Madrid and what to do and where to stay when in Barcelona for 3 days.

A month, I thought was the perfect amount of time. Yes, it was perfect in the sense that I was BEYOND ready to come home, but no, in the sense that there is so much more to Spain I wish I had experience. Which is why I want to go back.

I am writing this post as a reminder to myself why I studied abroad, and as an encouragement to everyone in college that if you have the opportunity, even for a few weeks, to take it, and study abroad. I made friends I would have never met, and now have memories to last me a life time.

College: My Experience Thus Far | Reality

Monday, October 7, 2013

As I sit here in bed, in my second apartment, during my third year of college, I wonder why I haven't talked about my college experience yet. Maybe because it has been such an overall unique experience that I didn't know how to verbalize it? Either way, here I am fellas, a junior in college, and here is my experience so far:

Junior year of high school I was determined I was going to school on the East Coast. I was going to go to school in New York, love everything, and be the happiest I had ever been. Then reality set in. I realized that as I was growing up, so was everyone around me. Moving across the country would not be the best decision for me because I would be a few days drive, or a 5 hour flight away, from the people that mean the most to me. So now the choice of if I wanted to go to school in Northern California or in LA. I applied to a total of 13 schools and got accepted to 6, I believe. Some of them I wondered why I even applied. I would have never been happy there and nothing felt right about it. One thing I regret about this process was visiting most schools after I had applied, with the exception of some Bay Area schools, like Berkeley. So I had my top 5 or so schools picked, and the rest were all back up schools. I was offered several scholarships but was denied acceptance to my two top schools. The two schools I actually wanted to go to, the two schools I dreamed about. Reality. A few weeks after I got wait listed/denied for these schools - I was wait listed at my top school in LA and they would not notify me in time, and denied my top choice in the Bay Area - I went to visit the school I currently attend in San Francisco. I fell in love. Something clicked with this campus, and the past spring break trips I had taken with my mom and aunt all came rushing back to me. I felt at home in this city. It was a city I could explore. It was something new, it was perfect. I accepted. My best friend and I had both been accepted into this school, but we did not want that to influence each others decisions. She visited the school, and two weeks later I visited. We decided not to say anything to each other until we had made our decision. By some miracle, we had both chosen the same school for completely different yet the same reasons. I would be a 45 minute flight, or 6 hour drive away from my parents and would be rooming with my best friend.
[I will have a whole separate blog post about living with my best friend, roommates, and my on-campus/off-campus living experiences.]

Freshman year was a lot. A lot of fun, a lot of studying, a lot of tears, a lot of friends, a lot of memories, a lot of exploring, a lot of independence. I had to learn how to budget money (did I?), I had to learn how to manage my time (sort of), I had to learn how to do laundry, I had to learn how to discipline myself, I had to branch out, I had to figure out who I was and what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I went into college undeclared. I guess I filled out the application wrong because I am almost positive I put down Sociology. Anyways, I was still set on the "Sociology" track so I took my first Soc class. SOC 101, Sociological Theory. I was not having it. This was during the time of the Occupy Movement and I could tell just from the different essays that I could not do this for the rest of my 4 years in college. My first semester I became a charter member of Kappa Alpha Theta at my university, and I can honestly say that joining a sorority, joining this sorority, was the greatest decision I have made thus far. It was my home away from home, and nothing that is portrayed in movies or shows. I now had my best friend/roommate and all of my sisters by my side. College was becoming more and more of a reality every day. By the end of Freshman year I knew who my true friends were, who my friends back home were, and a basic idea of what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I had my first internship working on a political campaign, and declared my major as Politics.

Sophomore year was a total whirlwind. It went by so extremely fast I do not even know where to start. I was disaffiliated coming back from summer break due to my position on Panhellenic Council, leaving me in charge of the PR and Recruitment aspects of Panhellenic Formal Recruitment. Craziness. You do not realize how much you miss something until you no longer have it. This was my case with my sorority sisters. Not having that support system beside me was like the first few weeks of Freshman year all over again, except this time I wasn't living in the dorms, I was living in an apartment. My very first apartment. The apartment I will always look back on with my amazing roommate. Yes, that same roommate, my best friend. "The Backroom." It was an upgrade from the dorms, a downgrade from our current apartment, but who can tell the future? Not us! We were four blocks away from campus, and we had no complaints. Except the fact that it was a studio and a bit small, but hey, beggars can't be choosers right? It was either this or living in the PanHandle. You think I'm kidding... We realized that apartment hunting in the city is not very easy for college students.  My Sophomore year after disaffiliation, I got my two amazing littles, one in the fall and one in the spring. I made new friends, new memories, and lost some other friends. Reality. I declared my minor in Public Relations, got a job at the law school, made more friends, decided I was going to study abroad, and also decided that it was time to move on from our first apartment. But first, Spain. [I blogged most of my trip in Madrid/Barcelona so click here to read about it!]

I was halfway done with college. I had received GPAs all above a 3.4, I had enjoyed all of my classes, and I actually had a feel for the city I lived in, the school I attended, and the people I called my friends. Coming back, I was about to start my third year of college, with a major I was interested in, and a minor I loved. I just recently moved in to my second apartment, and will be doing different blog posts about my apartment, my roommate, living on and off campus, and just living in San Francisco and on our own as a whole! I hope this post gave you some insight into my first two years of college!

Month in Madrid: Let's Get Fishy

Thursday, June 13, 2013

To get this post started, here is what was going through my mind as I was getting my fish pedicure!

I am currently getting the dead skin on my feet sucked off by fish in Mi Calle Nueva York in Madrid.. It feels like my legs and feet are asleep. You know? That tingling feeling? Yeah exactly how I feel right now. Then there's a bigger fish and he feels like a little pinch but that just reassures me that I still have feeling in my legs! Now it tickles. How long am I doing this for again? Oh and there's no wifi! That's fun... And my appointment didnt go through but they felt bad for the "cute American" so they let me go. Okay this really tickles! Putting my phone away now so I don't drop it in with the fish.

Long story short, it was interesting. I'm super glad I did it seeing as there are no places in America that do it, but I wish more came with the price. The only thing I did was go, put my feet in the water, get some lotion; pay and leave. I definitely thought that an actual pedicure was included in the price of 38€ which is the equivalent to around $50, but it wasn't and they continued to blame it on the fact that I didn't call and did it online. Oh well! They also got mad because I didn't write in the notes that I spoke English. Like I'm sorry if I'm trying to speak Spanish!!! Oh goodness, well here are some pictures from my pedicure!

Ps I had to take off my toe rings because "the fish no likey."
Also! If you are very very VERY ticklish, I do not recommend this!

My feet are now SUPER soft and my only complaint is that there wasn't an actual pedicure included. Oh well, when in Europe right?
Now I am getting ready for dinner at Botin, the oldest, still functioning restaurant in the world!

Month in Madrid: Cafes

Sunday, June 9, 2013

Hola amigos!
This past week I have gone to two different cafes that I have absolutely fell in love with (and will probably be going back to because I was so impressed!)

The first cafe is called Donde Monica, a cafe off of Calle Serrano (Rodeo Drive of Madrid). I found out about this cafe from the my little Madrid blog. It is a little cafe in a brick building, down a little ally way. So precious! Here are a few photos of Donde Monica! I will definitely be going back to get their burrata plate though (;

Another cafe I went to this morning is called Mama Framboise. I went on a little adventure this morning and found the cutest cafe! It was a French cafe with Spanish classics.

To go I got a ham and cheese quiche, some macaroons (the pistachio strawberry one is probably the best macaroon I have ever had!), and some chocolates for my parents!

One week left in Madrid! I can't believe it!!!
Tonight I am going to dinner for one of the girls in my programs birthday, and then I have class tomorrow through Wednesday, and our final on Thursday! On Wednesday afternoon, I made an appointment for a fish pedicure. I'm kind of scared not going to lie, but hey, when in Europe!!!

Hasta luego (:

Month in Madrid: Prado over Prada

Wednesday, June 5, 2013

After class today we had our usual Wednesday field trip day! We had lunch at Mas Q Menos, our favorite food place right down the steeet, and then headed off to the Prado! We had walked out front of the Prado but were waiting to go in for our field trip!

We were not allowed to take pictures inside, but we saw the works of El Greco, Velasquez, El Bosco and Goya. I also drifted away from the group a few times to go see some other artists and fell in LOVE with this painting by Rico.

Following the Prado, we went to the Ritz for drinks. I had the best wine I have EVER had, granted it didn't have much competition, it was incredible and te atmosphere of the Ritz only helped (:

Going to the Prado was definitely one of the most fun days I have had in these 3 weeks. I have one week, 2 days left in this city and as much as I love it, I of course miss home. I can't wait to go home but I still have some things to cross off my list before I go!

Until next time!

Month in Madrid: Weekend in Barcelona

Friday, May 31, 2013

First day in Barcelona! We took an 8 hour train ride and I tried to sleep the whole time but I only slept for like 3 hours. Esta bien. We then arrived in the city and went to find our hostel but the front desk didn't open until 9. It was 8 am. So we killed an hour in a cafe across the street! After breakfast we waited for check in and I made friends with the cutest French bulldog, Picote. We then walked around the beach, got some lunch, and headed back to the apartment for a siesta. Before going out we thought we should shower, I mean we did just have an 8 hour train ride and a nap. To our surprise, we had to take cold showers. I don't know how I did it, but I did. We made dinner and had tapas and got ready to go out. Being in Barcelona the first night was like our first few days in Madrid, we got lost. We ended up finding a beautiful plaza and found the main Princessa z3, the same bar we got lunch at, only this place was not as good as the beach bar. From here we went to Riley's and after  about three creepers it was time to head home!

Day two was probably one of the longest days of my life. I went down the street and brought back croissants and mimosas. I knew that if I was going to Barcelona I was going to see at least one of Gaudi's works, and seeing that it was a beautiful day, I wanted to see La Sagrada Familia. Although not everyone wanted to go at first, everyone was glad we went. We didn't go inside, seeing as we wanted to go to the beach, but the outside was enough for me. I'd done countless presentations on La Sagrada Familia in my highschool Spanish classes, so when I saw it exiting the metro station, I was speechless. It was probably the most beautiful building I have ever seen, even under construction. From La Sagrada Familia we went to the beach and laid out. We got some really amazing piña coladas, and then decided to go home, cook dinner, eat, and get ready. We made friends with the Swedish women who lived in the apartment above us, and recommended that we go to La Terrrazza, a club in a castle, rather than Opium, a bar/lounge on the beach. Party in a castle? Count me in! We headed there at 2 am... Yes. 2 am. How I am still alive right now I have no idea. Terrrazza was so much fun! Definitely a one time thing though, I don't think I can stay out and watch the sun come out again! I mean... Maybe again, but no time soon! This girl likes her sleep! We didn't get home until 8 am and we watched the sun come up at the castle. It was intense and a lot of fun, but I was ready to go home! We went back to the apartment and slept until 11 am, when we got kicked out for check out... OOPS!

After being told we had to check out in 10 minutes, we packed up the entire apartment in 5 minutes and headed to the cafe while we checked out. We then walked through the ramblas to get to the police station (to report a missing phone) which I am very glad we were able to do, and then headed to the airport. Yes we were 4 hours early to the airport, but the Barcelona airport is really a shopping mall, which I was all for! (All tax free!) the plane ride was super fast, 45 minutes max! It was just like flying from LA to SF, and I slept the entire time. We got back at around 9, went to Mas Q Menos, one of my favorites restaurants here (we've been 3 times and the waiters know us), went back to the apartment, and knocked out.
I am so glad I was able to go to Barcelona, and since this was my only weekend trip, I am definite glad that we chose to go to here! This upcoming weekend is my last weekend, so I want to stay in the city and do some last minute exploring (aka finish up my list of things to visit in Madrid). I am a little more than halfway through my month here and I cannot believe that it has flown by so fast, but I miss everyone back home.

Okay enough of me talking, enjoy some pictures, and I will talk to you all soon (:

Besos,
Kathryn

Month in Madrid: Royal Palace

Thursday, May 30, 2013

I think I found my perfect house. Without a doubt, yesterday was one of the most beautiful days I have had in this city!
We had class in the morning, took the metro for the first time (surprisingly it wasn't very scary), had lunch in plaza mayor, dessert at mercado San Miguel (third time I've been, no shame), toured the royal palace, and then went out with our teacher. Perfect day!

The palace was beyond perfect and I could not have asked for a better day! Now I am packing for my weekend trip to Barcelona!!!
I will send updates aling the way, hasta pronto!
